Our History
Western NRG opened its' doors in 1989, in Ventura, CA. Today, we currently service 443 customers in two major niche markets spanning 42 states and we service 80% of our clients remotely.
Since day one our business philosophy has remained the same, simply:
With Team NRG customer service comes first.
The "Analog Age"
We began picking up several clients through the repair sector of the business, repairing for companies all over North America. As time progressed and these repair clients expanded or needed new/refurbished equipment, NRG became the obvious choice for all of their Micom modems and multiplexers.
Eventually in 2000, NRG purchased the Micom line of business from Nortel Networks and became the sole manufacturer of new Micom equipment with 78 distributors in 32 countries. This led to the existing business model literally doubling overnight. We knew that the legacy products would eventually disappear but certainly saw the opportunity to leverage the existing technology by manufacturing our own Micom IP wedge product known as the Magnum Router. The Magnum Router allowed existing Micom accounts who’s WAN was running on dedicated or frame relay circuits to migrate to an all IP wide area network either private or a public Internet VPN. The acquisition also made it possible for NRG to increase its exposure to many new customers.
The "Digital Age"
As technology began to change, we were taking customers from analog leased lines to 56k digital circuits. The beauty of this was that we established relationships with customers that were now bringing us recurring business as their technology needs continuously grew and changed.
Convergence
Now, as technology changes once again, the circuits got even bigger and we were still leveraging digital technology such as T1’s or fractional T1’s using public frame relay as the medium of choice..
We became experts at connecting compressed voice equipment to any brand of PBX or key telephone system, using analog stations and trunks. Micom’s Marathon line of products incorporated legacy serial data traffic, IP traffic and compressed voice. With the “toll quality” voice compression algorithm the Marathon product was 3-4 years ahead of the curve. Years later, larger companies were racing to catch up, and coined the catch-phrase “convergence” to describe the idea of converging data and voice onto the same network.
Current Solutions
Driven by customer needs, NRG continued to change with the times reports Timothy A. Martinez, President of NRG. “Several years ago, one particular customer who was very concerned with network uptime forced us to examine and re-evaluate our current Internet security hardware offering. This particular Heavy Duty Industry client needed absolute continuous internet connection reliability between multiple offices. Their desire was to run multiple connections through independent ISP’s at each location and tie them together through a common appliance that would automatically load-balance and fail-over in the event of an Internet circuit failure. Our previous hardware vendor could not do that, and the desire to meet that need led us on our search for the most capable hardware that we could find.
Timothy continued, "When evaluating these new hardware solutions, we looked at half a dozen different security companies providing firewalls and content control services. In the end we chose SonicWALL hands-down because of their superior commitment to their channel partners. The product offering featured dual WAN capability and Unified Threat Management security services. Even the smaller edge products boasted capabilities that you would normally only find on a medium to large size more expensive products. The local SonicWALL sales and engineering staff were continually working shoulder-to-shoulder with our team to enable us, through continued education, to sell, configure and deploy Security Solutions. The differentiating factor for NRG was the fact that the SonicWALL products approach security dynamically. The SonicWALL appliances call home every hour and get the latest security updates so the product is literally changing on the hour to keep up with the ever changing Internet environment."
